The Situation
After a fifteen-year battle with late-diagnosed Type II Diabetes and a series of health complications that resulted from that, George Melvin finds himself in need of assistance with medical costs. Dialysis that started in 2005, and a rare dialysis-related condition in combination with a bone infection in his diabetic foot that were diagnosed in 2008 and that diminished George's earning ability have also swamped the Melvins with medical bills.
In addition, the kidney transplant that could offer George greater freedom to travel for work could also be the one hope that George has for gaining remission or even improvement from the poorly understood dialysis- related condition. Though kidney transplant is not a consistent remedy for NSF, it is currently the most hopeful treatment that has been documented.
George's friends and music community are joining together to try to help him to retire his existing medical bills and start an ongoing fund that could enable him to obtain the hoped-for kidney transplant.
As good as the music is going to be, the goal is to help a beloved member of our community get healthy, so that he may enjoy many more joyful years here with us. Donations are encouraged even if you have other plans on the 7th. Thank you.
For more information go to George Melvin Benefit or contact Cristina at 434-296-4181 or fsbcmgr@comcast.net.

Biography by Heather Phares & Stephen Thomas Erlewine (from Starr Hill Presents Announcement)
From http://www.Allmusic.com
After his stints performing as Palace, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, and under his own name throughout the '90s, by the end of the decade Will Oldham seemed to finally settle on the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker as the main outlet for his work. Regardless of the name he used to release his music or the musicians supporting him, Oldham's style remained largely the same, pitting shambling and often sparse music against his creaky, world-weary voice and literate lyrics. The Louisville, KY, native worked as an actor during the late '80s and early '90s, starring in John Sayles' 1987 mining film Matewan and appearing in the 1989 TV movie Everybody's Baby: The Rescue of Jessica McClure and the 1991 big-screen film Thousand Pieces of Gold.
Oldham debuted as a musician in 1992 with the Drag City single Ohio River Boat Song, which he released as Palace Songs; his debut album, There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You, arrived the following year as a Palace Brothers offering. By 1995's Viva Last Blues he was beginning to work as Palace Music, a name that stuck until 1997's Joya, which Oldham released under his own name. However, with 1998's Black Dissimulation and the following year's I See a Darkness, the Bonnie "Prince" Billy name seemed to stick, for the most part: aside from the soundtrack Ode Music and Guarapero: Lost Blues 2, the majority of Oldham's work from then on was credited to Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Ease Down the Road arrived in early 2001, featuring collaborators David Pajo, Catherine Irwin, Mike Fellows, and Harmony Korine. Master and Everyone appeared two years later. In 2004 came the release of a rather surprising project for Oldham -- Bonnie "Prince" Billy Sings Greatest Palace Music, in which his usual collaborators were joined by a band of Nashville session musicians for a set of polished re-recordings of songs from his back catalog.
Oldham's next project found him collaborating with guitarist Matt Sweeney (who had previously worked with Chavez and Zwan, as well as playing banjo on Ease Down the Road) for the evocative January 2005 release Superwolf. Reflective, bittersweet, and achingly melodic, it was praised as one of the year's first truly strong albums. Oldham and Sweeney followed up Superwolf that July with an extended single, I Gave You, featuring two non-album tracks. Sweeney was also on hand for the live album Summer in the Southeast, issued by Sea Note in November 2005. Oldham and Sweeney were joined by a full band for the shows. The singer released another solo album, The Letting Go, in September 2006 and followed it up with an EP of cover songs titled Ask Forgiveness in November 2007.
FSBC turns 87 this month! Can you believe we've been swimming since 1921? To celebrate this 87th birthday we are having a party this Saturday, June 14. We will have regular hours of operation for members and their guests, but at noon we are inviting the public to see what makes FSBC so great. The first two-hundred non-members have been invited to swim for ten cents, the same cost as it was when we opened in 1921. While we have capped the number of non-members at 200, this does not apply to member guests. Invite friends and neighbors to come, and their guest fees for the day are ten cents as well.
We will also have some other exciting activities to celebrate the birthday. Local organic donuts from Carpe Donut will be on grounds. Seize the donut! As a special evening treat, from 5:00 until 8:00, big band Sentimental Journey will perform outside on the patio. We hope to see you all here! Rain Cancels!

Fry's Spring Beach Club needs your help this coming weekend! This weekend, the Charlottesville Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be starting off a project to help clean-up and clear downed trees on our 4 acres of undeveloped property. CERT will be contributing volunteers and supplies, but it is crucial that we also provide volunteers and supplies to make this effort a success.
Charlottesville Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
CERT is a group of local volunteers aimed at providing support for local emergency and clean-up efforts. These volunteers offer support in coordination with emergency personnel and provide leadership in training and emergency preparedness education.
The Fry's Spring Beach Club clean-up project will serve as training and practice sessions for CERT while also offering them the opportunity to recruit new members. Over the period of the project, they expect local firefighters and forestry workers to participate in the efforts.
This is your opportunity to come out and help Fry's Spring Beach Club and the Fry's Spring community. Your volunteer efforts will help this valuable greenspace to survive and continue to be available for the entire community. Ultimately, this clean-up effort will lead to a woodchipped walking trail that connects Old Lynchburg Road, Jefferson Park Circle, and the main Fry's Spring Beach Club parking lot. This will allow everyone to enjoy the spring and creek, while providing a safe path to and from Fry's Spring Beach Club.
CERT will be starting at 9AM on Saturday, March 8. Volunteers should be prepared with good shoes/boots and bring food and water. Any equipment that you can contribute to the volunteer efforts (ie. trimmers, bush hog, chipper, chainsaw, gloves, safety glasses) will be most appreciated.
The CERT leader for the day will be David Booth.
As many of our employees are heading back to school, we are in serious need of volunteers to get us through the remainder of the season. In particular, we are searching for people to help at the Cafe and gate, weekdays from August 13 until September 3. If you might be interested or available, please contact Cristina Webster at 434.296.4181.
Cafe hours will be adjusted for the remainder of the 2007 summer season. The Cafe will continue to operate on weekends throughout August from 11 am to 7 pm. On weekdays from August 1 to August 10, the Cafe will close at 7 pm. On weekdays from August 10 through the end of the season, the Cafe will operate from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm.
On Saturday, June 30th, the Fry's Spring Beach Club Swim Team will be holding a fund raising yard sale from 8 AM to 12 PM. In order to participate, members make a $10.00 donation to the Swim Team. In exchange for the donation, members are provided parking lot sale space for their items and given full advertising coverage. In the case of rain, the yard sale will take place on Sunday, July 1, from 8 AM to 12 PM.
If you would like to participate or have questions, please contact Marcy Wisbauer at 296-7373 or Beth Bullard at 295-9677. We hope that you will come out to support the Swim Team.

If you're a geek in or around the Charlottesville metroplex or even if you're merely tech-curious, this is the event you don't want to miss. beCamp is Charlottesville's version of the BarCamp phenomenon—where the participants actually organize and create the conference. Think of it as an open-source geek gathering where you get to decide what goes into and what comes out of the event. It's 24+ straight hours of coding, collaborating, and conversing with people just as juiced about technology as you are. And the venue couldn't be more perfect for such mayhem: the Fry's Spring Beach Club!
BeCamp is hosted by the beTech group at UVA. BeTech is a self-organized group of web developers around the Charlottesville area that come together to share ideas and promote good practices.
Check-out the UVA press release Here
Fry's Spring Beach Club will be hosting the Charlottesville City Council Candidate's Forum on May 15 at 7:00 PM. Everyone is invited to attend and learn about the issues and candidates' positions. It's also a great opportunity to get in and spend some time in the clubhouse.
For more information, see the Fry's Spring Neighborhood Association's press release here.
In preparation for the Summer 2007 Fry's Spring Beach Club season, the Board of Directors and General Manager are organizing weekend clean-up projects for the last weekend of March and all weekends in April. This initiative is in response to the very helpful feedback that the membership provided through last year's end-of-the-Summer survey. If you are interested in assisting, we welcome your participation and contributions in any way you are able. We hope to get the club in shape to make this a truly memorable season that will bring new meaning to the club.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all who participate
If you are unable to participate in the clean-up day efforts, but would still like to assist in getting the club in shape, please consider making a contribution to the Building Restoration Fund. These funds will be used to make capital improvements and do repair work to the clubhouse. We are currently working to make significant repairs and improvements to the clubhouse to increase the quality of everyone's experience, but we are often faced with problems that we simply cannot afford given membership dues income. Extra contributions through the Building Restoration Fund will allow these repairs and improvements to be made and will allow the clubhouse to become a much more meaningful part of each and every membership.
