History
Charlottesville's first swim team was formed around 1960 and the "Dolphins" have since been an integral part of the Beach Club. Many excellent swimmers have grown up here. At Fry's Spring we endeavor to strike a good balance between encouraging competitiveness, yet at the same time providing fun activities for children ages 4 through 18. For the swimmers, many valuable and lasting friendships emerge from the whole experience. Swimming and social events take place throughout the summer.
Practice Times
The season begins with optional tune-up practices at an indoor pool for 10 weeks from March to May. When our pool opens daily morning practices are scheduled for different groups according to age, experience and ability. Afternoon practices, three times a week focus on starts and turns. The coaching staff is flexible about accommodating attendance at summer camps and other summer activities the swimmers may be involved in.
Swim Meets
The Swim Team competes in the Jefferson Swim League (JSL) in 6 meets during June/July, either at Fry's Spring or at other clubs, usually on Wednesdays. Participation in meets is voluntary, but most swimmers enjoy taking part. On home meet days FSBC pool closes around 4:00pm, although the grounds stay open. The meets begin at 6:00pm and end around 10:00pm. Swimmers can compete in up to 3 individual events and 2 relays. The last competitive event is the JSL Championship where all 15 teams compete over 2 days, the last weekend in July, at the UVA Aquatics Center.

Swim Team Achievements
In the early days, Fry's Spring Swim Team, with the oldest and largest team, dominated the other area teams. In the last decade other teams have gained in strength and this makes for a very exciting and competitive league. There are now 15 teams in the JSL. FSBC is still one of the largest teams with 120 swimmers. FSBC swimmers hold many JSL Championship record times.
Social Events
These are an important part of the swim team. They include pep rallies, such as tie-dye T shirts in the team colors, posters and face painting. We also take advantage of the Fry's Spring Clubhouse and patio for discos, pot luck suppers and a pancake breakfast. After swim meets the children and parents get together for pizza.
Organization
The swim team is managed by the FSBC parent organization. The Swim Team Board is made up of President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary and relies on parental input for the swim meets and social functions, most of which is fun!
